GALVESTON - City council members Thursday will consider approving an ordinance restricting golf cart use across the island, although East End golf cart users might face stricter rules than West End golf cart users regarding required safety equipment.

The two committees charged with drawing up rules on golf cart use in Galveston reached a consensus about everything except the type of safety equipment needed to drive a golf cart on Galveston's streets.

One more stupid situation where it takes multiple committees to make simple decisions.
I guess spineless, politically motivated city council members are just not able to handle this kind of "tough decision". Only kidding, because what's tough about this? Just make a damn decision and stick with it. Jamaica Beach is the only community that makes their own rules and they are just as wimpy as Galveston. Any real leader in Galveston can make this happen, including JB, if they just step up to the plate and do their jobs. I'm personally sick of hearing about golf carts. Just decide if they can drive on city streets, of any communities and what safety equipment is required. End of story, end of wasted time.A mayor, city council members and city manager with some cojones would be all that is required. Good luck on that one, Galveston!!

The question of driving golf carts on the beach needs to be examined separately. As a front row viewer at the west end, what I see most of the time are under age kids joy riding unsafely, doing figure eights endlessly across the sand. Currently all vehicles are prohibited on the beach. There should be no exception for carts. Because of police manpower shortages, the enforcement of differentiating between licensed and un-licensed vehicles is not practical. Keep the "Just say No" to all motorized vehicles on the beach.
